Because the Emory Proton Therapy Center will operate as a provider‑based department, some patients may see two types of charges associated with a visit, depending on their insurance coverage.
The facility fee represents the costs of operating a facility for health care delivery and covers the cost of equipment, utilities, maintenance, supplies and medications administered during a clinic visit. The fee also covers care provided by non-physician staff such as nurses, pharmacists, social workers, medical assistants and dieticians.
The professional fee represents charges for the professional services provided by the physician (MD), nurse practitioner (NP) or physician’s assistant (PA).
Depending on your insurance policy, the facility fee may apply to your hospital deductible and co‑insurance. If you have an annual out‑of‑pocket maximum, these charges will apply until that amount is met. Some patients may experience higher out‑of‑pocket costs, and we understand this may be unexpected. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to better understand how these charges may apply to your individual plan.
