Blog Hero Image: Emotional and Psychological Aspects of Pediatric Cancer Care

As we continue our series on pediatric cancer care, this installment focuses on the emotional and psychological aspects of treatment. I’m Becca, a Child Life Specialist at the Emory Proton Therapy Center (EPTC), and I believe that addressing these needs is as crucial as the medical treatment itself. At Emory, we use advanced proton therapy to minimize physical side effects, but we also prioritize the mental and emotional well-being of our patients and their families.

Understanding the Emotional Impact

A cancer diagnosis is life-altering, especially for children. The emotional turmoil can be overwhelming, affecting not only the child but also their family. Anxiety, fear, and sadness are common reactions, and it’s essential to provide comprehensive support to help them navigate these feelings. The American Cancer Society provides valuable resources for understanding and managing these emotional challenges.

Integrative Therapies for Emotional Support

At EPTC, we incorporate integrative therapies to support our patients’ emotional health. These therapies, including art and music therapy, help children express their feelings in non-verbal ways. Art therapy, for instance, allows children to use creative expression as an outlet for their emotions, which can be particularly beneficial when words fall short. The American Art therapy Association explains the benefits of these therapies in more detail.

“Art therapy sessions have been a game-changer for our patients, providing a creative outlet for their feelings.”

The Role of Counseling

Professional counseling is a cornerstone of our emotional support strategy. Our team includes experienced psychologists who specialize in pediatric oncology. They offer individual and family counseling sessions to help patients and their families cope with the emotional strain of cancer treatment. This support is tailored to address the specific challenges faced by each family.

Support Groups and Community

Connecting with others who are going through similar experiences can provide immense comfort and support. We facilitate support groups for both patients and their families, creating a community where they can share their experiences, offer support, and learn from one another. The Cancer Support Community offers additional resources and support networks for families.

Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

Mindfulness practices and relaxation techniques are integrated into our care plans to help manage stress and anxiety. These practices, including deep breathing exercises and guided meditation, promote a sense of calm and well-being. They are easy to incorporate into daily routines and can significantly improve emotional health.

“Mindfulness exercises have helped many of our patients manage their stress and anxiety.”

Parental Support

Parents often bear a significant emotional burden when their child is diagnosed with cancer. At EPTC, we provide resources and counseling specifically for parents to help them cope with their own emotions and support their child effectively. We encourage parents to prioritize their well-being, knowing that their health is crucial for their child’s recovery.

Takeaway

The emotional and psychological aspects of pediatric cancer care are integral to the overall treatment process. At EPTC, we are committed to providing comprehensive support that addresses both the physical and emotional needs of our patients. By combining advanced proton therapy with compassionate emotional care, we aim to improve the quality of life for our young patients and their families.
